Simchat Torah Program, Luncheon & Fund Raising
Our Simchat Torah celebration includes exotic food, dancing, singing, and beautiful decorations. We will celebrate with an organized dancing program and new song books with Hebrew words transliterated into English. Six young men and women from Yeshiva University will help enhance our yom tov experience. Our fund-raising will support children’s and young adult programming, with the fund allocation to be recommended by a committee chaired by Tanya Posner. We ask everyone to “dig deep” to support our fund-raising. This is a perfect opportunity to give honor to the Almighty and the Torah, and to give a New Year push to accomplish great things. We encourage you to attend services and to invite your family, friends and potential new members to join us in our Simchat Torah celebration. If you have any questions, please contact Ben Karan 228-7279, Bruce Glaser 351-1546 or Rabbi Kalmar 228-9296. Also, please see Sarah Karan’s announcement below for more about the Seudah.

Simchat Torah Seudah
Dear ASKT Friends,
We are in the midst of planning a special Simchat Torah Seudah which will take place on Friday, October 1, 2010. In preparation for this meaningful and delicious Seudah, we are requesting personal family stories of Jewish content. They will be included in a project that will be displayed at the Seudah. The stories we are looking for are of your ancestors, life in the "Old Country," or Sefardic heritage, coming to America, Aliyah stories, stories behind family holiday traditions and foods, etc. One paragraph to a page is sufficient. Please include it in digital form with any photographs appropriate to the story. Everyone has a story and we want to hear yours! Please e-mail your unique stories or any questions to Amy Gelfman at jonathan@gelfmandesign.com. Thank you so much and we look forward to a wonderful 5771 together!
Your participation will help make this Simchat Torah a true community success!
Please let us know if you are available for shopping, cooking or decorating to prepare of the Seudah. Every little bit of help is greatly appreciated. If you are interested in helping, please e-mail Sara Karan at sarakaran@gmail.com.

Red/Purple Cabbage
August 25, 2010
Recently it has been discovered that red/purple cabbage may be infested with small white bugs. The insects might not be noticed during a casual check of the cabbage, but if the leaves are removed from the head and checked carefully (before the leaves are washed), the bugs can easily be seen standing or crawling on the inside of the leaves.
The insects have been found in cabbage checked in New York, Baltimore, and Chicago, but the exact extent of the infestation or the reason for its sudden appearance is not yet understood.
We therefore recommend that until further notice one should only used red/purple cabbage in one of the following two ways:
• It is purchased pre-washed and pre-shredded (i.e. bagged cabbage).
• The leaves are removed from the head and each leaf is rinsed thoroughly under a stream of water.
To the best of our knowledge, green cabbage is not affected by this infestation.
We will continue to monitor the issue and inform the public if the infestation ends and/or if there are alternative washing methods which are sufficient.
